Separation Friction Drill

Separation issues often start before the person leaves. Watch the chain leading up to the exit, not just the empty house period.

What matters most

  • Identify the first predictor that changes the dog.
  • Use shorter absences with calmer departure cues.
  • Stop expecting the hardest exits to be training sessions.

Working sequence

  1. List all pre-exit triggers that change behavior.
  2. Practice lower-intensity versions first.
  3. Lengthen only when the early routine stays calm.
